There are several challenging careers that deal with children, offering a rewarding experience for those that enter them. Working with children requires patience, understanding, humor and energy to keep up with their active bodies and minds.

Teaching is an excellent career choice for those who love kids. You can pursue an early childhood education degree, elementary or secondary education degree. This field allows you to impart knowledge to children, work with those who have special needs and help to shape young minds. Many, after teaching for a few years, advance into administration as principals or in other supervisory roles.

Counseling children in schools, mental health facilities or in a private practice is another top position to go for. This area involves helping children through difficult times, behavioral issues, education planning and learning life skills. It is a much-needed area and many positions are open across the country. You will need to have good listening skills, empathy, professionalism and a drive to make a difference.

Pediatricians work with children to diagnose illness, do routine check ups and to treat patients as needed for injuries. This field offers competitive salaries and a rewarding experience. Some doctors work in either a hospital, a university research hospital, a private practice or a health organization. It requires intensive schooling and is for those who have attention to detail, love to work with children and are disciplined to handle the rigors of medical school.

Each of these fields offers a different experience with children, but each one gives you the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life.

For those interested in the path of costume designer, learning the different techniques of famous costume designers is interesting and educational. These tips can be used to better one’s self as a costume designer when working on set design, fashion design pieces or even children’s costumes.

Whatever the design project, a designer brings their initial designs to fruition in several different ways. Some designers choose to sketch their ideas, while others are more visual and drape material and fabrics across a dress form. Typically any famous costume designer will then consult their pattern maker who will create a finished version of the sketch created. Little things such as placement of buttons, hem lines and measurements are all discussed in order to have a successfully created finished product.

The desire to study abroad was mostly a Third World phenomenon, where scholars from developing countries travelled to First World countries for educational opportunities. This has now changed as people from all over the world try to further their education in various countries.

Why Study Abroad

There are three main areas where studying abroad can be beneficial. These are personal, academic and career-based benefits. Many of the benefits are intangible but long-lasting.

On a personal level, studying abroad enables an insight into and appreciation of other cultures. With globalization, being able to live, work and learn with others from different regions helps to foster better global relationships. Most people leave with a new and wider view of world affairs.

Becoming immersed in a particular culture can actually strengthen your academic endeavors. As such someone learning Italian may find it easier to absorb and appreciate the language by studying in Italy. Whether studying overseas for a term or fulltime, college credits are eraned. These can be used when planning to go on to further education or even for career advancement.

People who want a career in fields such as international relations, business, diplomatic and government service might have an advantage if they study abroad. People who pursue foreign study programs tend to be bilingual as well as have a better understanding of international business practices. They can be an asset to a company that wants to expand on the global level.

With all this said, the decision to study abroad should not be made lightly. Careful consideration should be given to the types of programs available such as postgraduate studies, internships and opportunities to teach. Depending on your goals and financial situation, you should be able to find the ideal study abroad program.

Understanding the Course Selection Process

For many new college students the course selection can seem daunting. They struggle with deciding which courses to choose. However, there are ways to make the process less intimidating. Some things you can do are:

  • Speak to a career advisor at school to get help determining what courses are appropriate your career choice.
  • Think of what interest you most and look for course along those lines
  • Seek out professors with strong reputations for offering quality instruction.

It is important to accept that you may sometimes drop courses during your college years. This is natural as you make adjustments to shape your career path. The important thing when choosing courses is to read as much about them as you can beforehand. This is necessary as at some institutions the add-drop courses process is not simple.

What Not To Do

One mistake to avoid is not to select courses just because your friends have chosen them. College is a time of growth and discovery, there is no need to select courses just to be with friends. Some people also make their selections based on what their parents want. This can be a big mistake as you may not like the courses and your college life can become one of despair.

Do not select courses thinking they will be easy. Yes, it is important to do well at college, but challenging courses will increase the number of opportunities available to you. While at college you may qualify for awards and honors based on the courses you select. When you enter the work world, course selection can also make or break your career options.

The bottom line is to choose carefully. Get advice if needed to ensure your choices are the best ones for you.
